LYRICS of most of the victory songs the youth in the Odododiodioo constituency sang, carried the message loud and clear they could not be ?bought? with the street-lights which were hastily erected in the run-up to last Tuesday?s bye-election.
?Wo yee kane?? wo yeo komi ke lo aloo banku ke shito? literally translated ?we do not eat street-lights, we eat kenkey and fish or banku and pepper? was one song which featured prominently in the celebrations.
As part of the campaign to wrestle the Odododiodioo seat from the NDC, the NPP strategists notably Shiekh I. C. Quaye, Nii Agyiri Blankson, Lord Kommey and Mad. Theresa Tagoe, decided on fixing some smart development projects in the area.
Within days, electricity poles were erected and connected to the Accra grid; in addition, some pot holes were scrapped, re-gravelled and tarred in the hole of swaying the constituents to vote for the NPP.
On the polling-day, when the NPP officials realized that things were not going in their favour, the power in the area was cut, in what the constituents believe was a ?vote for us or lose the lights? threat.
This caused the music which was being played all over the constituency to ease, as well as other electricity related activities.
However, that did not deter the youth, as they kept thumb-printing of the NDC candidate till victory was made certain and with it the ?you may take your light? songs.
