Management of the University of Ghana has stressed it will not hand over the newly built University of Ghana Teaching Hospital to the Health ministry as instructed by government.

Over the weekend, national security operatives stormed the campus to take over the newly built facility on the orders of the Health Minister Kwaku Agyemang Manu but they were forced to retreat following opposition by the Vice Chancellor and other members of the University’s management.

Acting CEO of the UG Medical Centre Professor Aaron Lawson told Starr News the university will not cede management of the newly built hospital.

“The University is not accepting any such thing and the Vice Chancellor has made it clear to the National security that it is not acceptable. It takes time to recruit people, we advertised in May and received over 26,000 applicants out of which we shortlisted 13,000 and we’ve been interviewing them since then. We have requested government to provide a 48 million dollar loan facility to complete the entire project”.

There is a turf war between the University and the Health Ministry over the management of the facility since it was commissioned a year ago.
