Member of Parliament for Juaboso constituency, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh has strongly condemned the decision by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to halt the declaration of four parliamentary seats vacant.
In an exclusive interview with Happy 98.9fm ahead of parliamentary session on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, Akandoh emphasized that the Speaker of Parliament holds the ultimate authority on parliamentary matters, and the Supreme Court’s intervention undermines this authority.
Akandoh argued that if the Supreme Court needed to address this issue, it should have convened a meeting with Parliament for deliberation rather than issuing a court order. He stressed that the Chief Justice cannot unilaterally suspend the Speaker’s ruling, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will continue to uphold the Speaker’s decisions, given their majority status.
The controversy surrounding the four parliamentary seats has sparked intense debate, with Akandoh’s statements reflecting the NDC’s stance on the matter.
