Individuals who have their names missing on the voters’ register have themselves to blame for the mishap, the Electoral Commission has said.
The commission on Wednesday, December 7, said it was the responsibility of electorate to have checked their entries on the roll during the exhibition process that was undertaken by the commission months ago, hence the EC can’t be held liable in such instances.
There were several incidence of missing names on the register, in some polling stations, reports say.
Most individuals who turned out to vote Wednesday got frustrated at some polling stations in several parts of the country following the situation that popped up on voting day.
But the EC insists it has very little to do in this regard, since it had earlier given them opportunities through the continuous registration and the exhibition process to correct the anomalies before the elections.
“Those people were given very good opportunity to have their names back on the register, unfortunately they did not do that. And the basic principle is this, once your name is not on the register, you cannot exercise your franchise,” the Director of Electoral Services, at the Electoral Commission, Samuel Tetteh told the media Wednesday afternoon.
