The Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamina Afenyo-Markin, has criticised the John Dramani Mahama-led government of attempting to shift blame for a looming power crisis onto the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration.

Speaking during the vetting of Minister of Energy-designate, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, at Parliament on Monday, January 13, 2025, he expressed concerns over the blame games.

"It is deeply concerning that the new administration is attempting to shift blame for the so-called looming power crisis onto the previous government when the record clearly reflects that the outgoing administration, despite challenges, managed to maintain a stable and reliable power supply," he remarked.

Afenyo-Markin recalled the power crisis under the previous NDC government, noting its devastating impact on businesses nationwide.

"I have said this with utmost confidence and conviction, drawing from my experience as Chair of the ECG Board. Contrast this with Mahama's administration’s notorious 'dumsor', which inflicted untold hardships on Ghanaians, disrupted homes and communities, stifled economic growth, and eroded public confidence," he asserted.

The Member of Parliament for Effutu further emphasised that Ghanaians have entrusted the current NDC government with the responsibility to deliver uninterrupted power supply.

"The people of Ghana have entrusted you with the responsibility to lead, not to lament. We shall not tolerate any attempts to revisit the failures of the past or excuse inaction with blame-shifting rhetoric.

"Accordingly, if approved by this House, the nominee must return to the people's chamber with a comprehensive, detailed, and sustainable plan to ensure uninterrupted power supply. What we expect are clear solutions and strategies, not excuses or blame games. The people of Ghana deserve leadership that prioritises action over rhetoric, responsibility over deflection, and results over excuses," he added.

Meanwhile, President John Dramani Mahama has convened an urgent meeting with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to address Ghana’s persistent power sector challenges.

This crucial discussion, held on Monday, January 13, 2025, sought to resolve longstanding financial disputes, particularly the government’s outstanding debt to the IPPs, which had ballooned to $1.2 billion as of October 2024.

The mounting debt has strained the IPPs, with repeated threats to halt power production heightening fears of an imminent energy crisis.

The meeting between President Mahama and the IPPs marked a critical first step in addressing these financial concerns and stabilizing Ghana’s energy sector.
