The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has cautioned the general public against the employment of services of unaccredited waste management companies.
This comes after the Assembly sued the Ministries of Justice, Food and Agriculture and the Registrar Generals Department for contracting the services of unauthorized waste management companies.
The Public Relations Officer of the AMA Gilbert Ankrah in an interview emphasized the fact that all the Assembly does is guided by the law.
“Per the Assembly’s 2017 Sanitation by-law it is an offense for any individual, household or any business owner to receive waste management services from unauthorized persons or contractors that the assembly has not registered for that purpose.
He added: “This is not the first time that the assembly is prosecuting people for failing to subscribe to any of the accredited waste management companies. What we’ve done so far from January to May we’ve prosecuted over 450 persons for various sanitation offices."
"And out of this over 41 of these persons failed to subscribe to waste management company."
"I’ll like to entreat the public to know who is responsible for your area, register with them and for that, we’re sure of sustainable ways of managing our waste.”
