Youth club declares annual tree planting day

Awutu Bawjiase (C/R), Sept. 22, GNA – The Bawjiase-based Blessed Youth Club has declared every September 03 as annual tree Planting Day for the people as part of their contribution to the protection of the environment.

Mr Emmanuel Asamani, Assemblyman for Awutu Bawjiase-Akpeshika Electoral Area and chairman of the club, made this known after a tree planting exercise at Awutu Bawjiase.

He said most of the trees would be planted along the banks of rivers in the town, state-owned schools and health facilities.

Mr Asamani said nearly 2,000 seedlings of acacia and mahogany species were planted when the programme was first launched.

He expressed the club’s appreciation to the Winneba area branch of the Forestry Commission and other organizations that contributed to the launching.

Mr Asamani appealed to people in the traditional area to extend material and financial support to the club to help facilitate its long-term environmental and other self-help projects.

The Agona Swedru District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police Shaibu Osei, praised the club and appealed to members not to make the initiative a nine-day wonder.

He appealed to members of the Club to liaise with the elders of the town and form community watchdog groups to assist in combating crime in the district.

Police Inspector Emmanuel Ampah, In-charge of the Bawjiase Police Station, advised members of the club to maintain and further nurture the self spirit they had started.
