The Acting Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), David Boadi Asamoah, has warned that individuals including electricians and ECG contractors found tampering with electricity meters will face strict legal consequences.
According to him, this unlawful practice causes financial losses to the power distribution company.
Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Monday, February 3, 2025, Mr. Asamoah stated, “We [ECG] will conduct thorough investigations, and there are laws in this country. After our investigations, law enforcement agencies such as the police will take over."
He further cautioned, “I must assure you that ECG will not spare anyone whether a contractor, an electrician, or any other individual. If you are caught engaging in meter tampering, you will face the full force of the law. We will go after both the perpetrators and the beneficiaries.”
To support his claim, Mr. Asamoah revealed that approximately 10% of the 70,000 installed meters in Dansoman had been tampered with.
He explained that these illegal connections prevent ECG from accurately recording the amount of electricity consumed by affected households, leading to revenue losses.
He stressed that all those caught will be prosecuted, as their actions constitute a criminal offense.
Asamoah further emphasised that meter tampering undermines the company’s financial stability and negatively impacts the government's revenue mobilization efforts.
