Comment to:Doctors Suspend Strike
These Doctors are behaving as if they are comparable to the Doctors in the US, UK and the one's abroad.
When I say abroad, I limit my scope to outside Africa (South Africa and some North African countries excluded). I am referring to specifically the US, UK and some European countries.
What some Ghanaians do not know is that a qualified Ghanaian trained Physician would still have to school for about 4 to 7 years (for residencies and fellowships) in the US, UK etc. to be qualified as a practicing doctor; that is not even guaranteed.
Based on the above, do they think they should be paid closer to doctors in the above named countries that they always compare themselves with?
Very few Ghanaian doctors make it as US certified doctors licensed to practice.
What is painful is that these few U.S. and UK certified Ghanaian doctors when practicing in Ghana do not make such noises the GMA members are making. The reason being that they understand the situation on the ground; I mean they know Ghana is a developing country and gradually would get to where they will be adequately compensated. Their exposure contributes immensely in their appreciation of their unflinching service to their country of birth.
It is about time the public is well informed about these details to stop these greedy, unsympathetic and partisan politically motivated GMA members from comparing themselves to Doctors abroad who they base some of their argument on when it come to their salaries.
The same tax payers whose money they benefited from be it partially or wholly during their training are the ones they are subjecting to painful deaths.
I am not surprised they chose money over precious lives. Calling off the strike might save some people now but the ones their previous actions killed or had their sicknesses worsened would never forgive them.

Dear Folks,
As a health professional and most importantly a former DG of the Ghana Health Services, Dr. Sory is right in saying what he has said. However, the HEALTH of the people (entire populace) of Ghana is not the prerogative and does not rest solely and exclusively on the GHS. Yes, GHS has a part to play and is a stakeholder, but certainly not the only one and MUST NOT be seen as such. There are many things (factors) that go into/determine the health of a working population (labour force) of a country and all the entire citizenry. Aside the medical practitioners (i.e., medical doctors, dentists, pharmacists, dispensers, nurses, lab techs, etc, etc) the work of other professionals in various disciplines must be recognized - environmentalists, agriculturalists (nutritionists), architects, food technologists, food scientists, food vendors, teachers (at all levels) etc, etc - in fact the ENTIRE SOCIETY must be involved.
In fact, I know places in the world, where HEALTH ISSUES/PROBLEMS are first tackled by looking at the NUTRITION of the people, before ENVIRONMENT and HEALTH (i.e., medical intervention). For example, if the working force is suffering an epidemic of malaria attack, it would be economically wiser to look first to the poor environmental issues, followed by nutrition and then medical intervention, for a long term solution. Yes, medical, but within the "shortest and immediate" term solution. All the many cases of typhoid are food-related (nutrition) and poor sanitation (environment) and the lack of proper education - no wonder the Bible has said "For lack of knowledge, my people perish."
It is very pathetic that many things are in REVERSE ORDER in Ghana. Our priorities, if we have any at all, have been reversed. In fact, ALL THE CITIZENRY MUST BE BLEEDING at the state of affairs in the country (NO POLITICAL UNDERTONES here, but OBJECTIVE thinking and analysis).
Long Live Ghana!

Break the monopoly of the doctors by training more doctors. Our GMA is created a dangerous closed shop run by very callous people who only care about money. Go to Tumu and see, the doctor has his private clinic and is hardly in the hospital. If you dare complain he will threaten to resign and no other doctor will come there for a long time. If you want the best medicines they are in his hospital but you only get paracetamol when you go to the district hospital. This is not unique to Tumu. Our doctors are spending more time in their private practices than in the government hospitals. In UK and other places people go to medical school through more diverse routes and I can say without fear of contradiction that our doctors are not better than those produced in the UK. Or are they? If they are why do all our leaders go overseas for better treatment?

If you are not well in Wa you have to go to accra for treatment, shame on all the doctors who are not crying for good hospitals all around the country. Why should the government pay doctors who cant save lives because the hospital they are working dont have operation room.
