Former Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, has revealed that he felt outsmarted by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during their 2024 general election campaign.

Speaking during an Instagram Live session on January 2, 2025, the former footballer accused the NPP of leveraging his popularity for political gain.

Gyan, who appeared visibly displeased, claimed the party intended to use his influence to sway his fans to vote for them.

"They [NPP] used my popularity as a political tactic to get my fans to vote for them. I lost respect because of this. God is not going to forgive those involved," he said.

In February 2024, Asamoah Gyan was appointed to serve on the NPP's manifesto committee, specifically as the Chairman of the Youth and Sports sub-committee. The appointment was made by the party's flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

However, five months later, Gyan publicly disassociated himself from the party, announcing his decision to focus solely on his role as a former footballer and philanthropist.

While he did not elaborate on the reasons behind this move, he pledged to remain committed to advancing the welfare of Ghanaian youth and undertaking initiatives that contribute to their development.
