Winneba, (C/R) August 27, GNA - Professor Jophus Anamuah-Mensah, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has inaugurated a 13 member committee that would be responsible for organizing the 19th edition of the Ghana University Games (GUSA) scheduled to take place at Winneba campus of the University on January 2006.
The Committee headed by Dr. Jonathan O. Ammah would among other things be responsible for the provision of accommodation to participants, financial matters and publicity.
All the five public Universities including, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Cape Coast, University for Development Studies, (UDS) Tamale, University of Ghana, Legon and the UEW would take part in the three week programme. The sporting disciplines to be competed for include soccer, table tennis, handball, basketball, volleyball, athletics, football and scrabbles.
Prof. Anamuah-Mensah said despite the huge financial demands for hosting the sporting event, the administration would do it best to ensure the smooth take off of the programme.
The Vice Chancellor said that the inter-University sports forms an integral part of educational experience for students in the (UEW) especially those offering physical education.
He said there is goodwill by the University authorities to support such sporting activities since recreation for the graduates are widely acknowledged to have a positive impact upon motivation and productivity in the work place.
Prof. Anamuah-Mensah added that if the workforce becomes healthier through active participation in sports and leisure, they would absorb more knowledge and thereby improve on their working abilities. He reiterated that plans are far advanced for the University to renovate some of the existing playing fields and courts as well as construct new ones for the Event.
The Vice Chancellor therefore urged members of the committee to demonstrate their expertise, hard work and capabilities to ensure the success of the competition.
Dr Ammah gave the assurance that members of the Committee would ensure smooth, transparency and fair play at the competition. He said the Event would provide opportunities for students in UEW and other universities to develop sportsmanship, cooperation, leadership and loyalty in all related disciplines.
