Commodore Godson Zowonoo, Flag Officer Commanding, the Western Naval Command, on Tuesday called on Ghanaians to lead healthy lifestyles by engaging in regular sporting activities.

He said many people have recognized the need to live healthy lifestyles but many more are yet to come to this realization and continue to engage in unhealthy life styles.

Commodore Zowonoo made the call in an address read for him at the opening ceremony of 2014 Ghana Navy Inter-Ports Sports Competition at Essipong near Takoradi.

The four-day competition is under the theme “Unifying Service Personnel through sports”.

Teams from the Naval Headquarters, Headquarters of Eastern Naval Command, Tema Naval Base, Basic Leadership Training School, Headquarters of Western Naval Command, Navy Dry Dock, Sekondi Naval Base, Navy Trades Training School, Sekondi, Fleet and the Ghana Navy Stores Depot are taking part in the competition.

They will be competing football, volley ball, athletics, thug of war, table tennis and hand ball.

Commodore Zowonoo asked the participants to add at least 30 minutes of exercise to their daily schedules to help them stay healthy.

“As military men and women, the onus lies on us to set the stage through exercising and good dieting for the general public to emulate”. He said.

Commodore Zowonoo said the essence of the games is to promote healthy lifestyle, promote unity among naval personnel and to discover new talents for the Ghana Navy in order to compete in the Ghana Armed Forces Games in September/October this year.

He urged the participants to exhibit good sportsmanship in all disciplines and to abide by the rules of the games.
