The hugely anticipated 2015 Ghana Basketball Awards ceremony is set to dazzle a capacity audience on Friday October 16 in Accra, organizers have confirmed.
The historic event is expected to be a typically spectacular fashion, a night that will reach its highest point when the best players, coaches and officials will be rewarded for their excellence in the year under review.
The prestigious award returns this year after a break in 2014 due to technical challenges but already expectation has reached fever pitch as players and officials jostle for individual and group honours in two weeks.
Other major stakeholders including sponsors and the media will also be recognized for their significant contribution to the growth and popularity of the game in Ghana.
The event, which will be heralded with glitz and glamour would be telecast LIVE on TV3 from 9pm.
Awards are up for grabs in 21 categories, with more than 150 guests drawn from the sporting fraternity, businesses, some members of the Diploma corps, government and media amongst others expected to fill the TV3 auditorium.
The response has been overwhelming for the big function which will see serious competition for honours in the various categories.
It’s been almost two months of cursory planning, evaluation and selection by the planning and committee drawn from the major stakeholders.
The vice-chairman of the Greater Accra Basketball Association and a member of the committee, Kofi Amanyo, has expressed his optimism about next two week’s event describing it a long-awaited dream.
“We have been working in the background for more than two months and I’m happy to say that the award will come off on October 16, a statement signed by the planning committee chief Kofi Amanyo said.
“It’s that time of the calendar where the best are rewarded for their immense contribution to the fastest growing sport in the country.
“The award belongs to the players, fans and sponsors who have contributed in diverse ways in ensuring the sustainability of the game.
“As a planning committee, our work is not entirely done as we have to put some finishing touches to the event which we believe will be the most exciting so far.”
Organizers of the event, Rite Sports, have promised an exciting night characterized with music and serious basketball matters.
Winners of the GHAPSA, GUSA and PUSAG Championship will be rewarded with Tertiary Player and High School Coach of the Year expected to be the new category additions this year.
Other categories to be competed include MVP, High School Player of the Year (boys and girls), Female Player of the Year, Most Promising Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year and Referee of the Year amongst others.
