Eight years down the line since the first National Race walking Cup was held in the harbor city of Takoradi under the sponsorship of Energizer, with the support of Voltic,Savoy Hotel, Ahenfie Hotel and The Ghana National Fire Service.
There have since been several competitions which have not created the avenue for both individual and team scoring. The Second National Race walking Cup qualifying series which was held in Greater Accra today at the El-Wak Sports Stadium saw about eighty(80)walkers from all walks of life taking part in the event. Walkers took of from the stadium at exactly 7:00 a.m.through Cantonment Post Office, Flagstaff House,Arkoh Adjei Interchange, Fire Service Headquarters,Labone Junction,Airforce Officers Mess and back to El-Wak.
Stanley Brimah took the first position whiles John Segbe,Eric Kwabena Nuamah,Atta Bright and Prince Frimpong following in the second, third, fourth and fifth positions respectively. This presupposes that the five have qualified to take part in the finals to be held on the 26th of July 2005.The next stop of the event will be the Volta Regional Capital, Ho and Koforidua in the Eastern Region.
In an address delivered after the event by Mr. Fredrick Asamoah, chairman of the El-wak keep fit club, he thanked all the walkers for their contribution towards the success of the event. He reiterated the fact that the walk was aimed at developing the lesser known sports in the country to attain the status that the so called popular sports have reached.
In an interview with Vincent Asumang the Ace walker, he indicated that the second national race walking is aimed at helping walkers to be able to score on individual and team basis.
