$300k loss: Argentine team trolls Drake with ‘Not Like Us’ after rapper’s sports bet losing streak continues

Drake Drake

Drake lost yet another sports bet last night as Argentina defeated his native Canada in the Copa America tournament, prompting the team to troll him with Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us”—and marking a $300,000 loss for the rapper who has placed several unsuccessful bets in recent months.

KEY FACTS

- Drake posted to his Instagram story on Monday that he had placed a $300,000 bet that Canada would defeat Argentina at Tuesday night’s match, captioning his post: “This could get Messi,” a reference to Argentine star Lionel Messi.

- Drake’s bet was considered a long shot, as Argentina is the reigning Copa America tournament champions and had beaten Canada last month, with most sports bettors favoring Argentina to win.

- Canada lost to Argentina 2-0 with goals from both Messi and Julian Alvarez.

- Following the win, the team’s official social media accounts trolled Drake and his bet loss by including Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us” in posts on both X and Instagram.

- “Not like us, not with us,” the Argentine team posted on X alongside a picture of the team with the song title superimposed over their heads, garnering more than 170,000 likes and many amused responses from fans about the Drake trolling.

HOW MUCH HAS DRAKE LOST ON SPORTS BETS?

Though Drake has a largely mixed record with sports betting, he has lost most of the bets he’s placed this year and has prompted some sports fans to call his bets the “Drake curse.” He’s lost nearly $2.5 million worth of bets since March of this year. He lost $1 million in bets in June alone after he bet $500,000 that the Edmonton Oilers would win the Stanley Cup and another $500,000 that the Dallas Mavericks would win the NBA Finals—though neither went his way. He apparently would’ve won $1.025 million if his Oilers had won and another $1.375 million on the Mavericks, according to screenshots he posted of the bets he placed. In May, Drake lost another $565,000 after betting that British boxer Tyson Fury would defeat Ukraine’s Oleksandr Usyk to win the heavyweight title. He lost $615,000 in March on another boxing bet after predicting Francis Ngannou would defeat Anthony Joshua.

CONTRA

Drake has notched a few betting victories over the years, including a recent payday for correctly betting the Kansas City Chiefs would win Super Bowl LVIII in February. He placed a $1.15 million bet on the Chiefs and earned a more than $2.3 million payout. “I can’t bet against the swifties,” Drake posted on Instagram, referring to Taylor Swift’s highly publicized relationship with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. In a big payday, Drake bet that UFC fighters Molly McCann and Paddy Pimblett would win their respective fights in July 2022—and he won his bet on both counts, apparently walking away with $3.7 million. Drake reportedly promised both fighters Rolex watches with his winnings, and Pimblett posted a video to Instagram the following month receiving his watch.

SURPRISING FACT

Drake has bet on Argentina’s football team before, though it didn’t go his way: During the 2022 World Cup, Drake bet on Argentina to beat France during regular time, but when the game went into extra time, it meant Drake would lose his bet—even though Argentina ended up winning.

KEY BACKGROUND

On “Not Like Us,” Lamar alleges Drake pursues minors and calls him and his associates “certified pedophiles,” which Drake denies. “Not Like Us” topped the Billboard Hot 100 and surged again in popularity in June after Lamar performed the track live alongside other West Coast rappers and athletes including Dr. Dre, YG, DeMar DeRozan and Russell Westbrook. Lamar released the music video for “Not Like Us” on July 4.
