Former assistant coach of the Black Stars, Anthony Adusei has disclosed that he was surprised when then-head coach, Otto Pfister named Tony Baffoe as Ghana captain in the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations final in Senegal.

Ghana's ambition of winning its fifth African Cup hit a snag after losing 11-10 on penalties against Ivory Coast.

A chunk of the players that participated in the tournament in Senegal including Tony Yeboah and Sarfo Gyamfi attributed their defeat in the final to captaincy rift.

Substantive captain Abedi Pele was suspended for the match against Ivory Coast due to the accumulation of cards and Yeboah, whom many people thought was the assistant, was supposed to lead the team on the field.

However, a last-minute decision from authorities saw Tony Baffoe handed the armband.

In an interview with Kwaku Sarpong Sarkodie Spanky of Bryt FM, the former assistant trainer of Ghana shared that the decision to hand a leadership role to Tony Baffoe in the final came as a surprise to him.

“When Otto Pfister released his starting 11 and named Tony Baffoe as captain for the final I was surprised because he (Baffoe) had not been in the national team for long”

“In fact, when he mentioned Baffoe’s name I asked myself, so Tony Baffoe has also become a captain but the truth of the matter is that nobody consulted at the time they were naming a captain for the final” he said.
