The North Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has entreated President Akufo-Addo to recover the GH¢85 million allocated to his cousin Kelvin Ofori-Atta’s company, Javkier Limited, for stadium rehabilitation.
Ablakwa claims the funds have not been utilised, leading to the poor state of the stadia, which has sparked controversy.
He stressed the importance of accountability, specifically mentioning Kelvin Ofori-Atta and his company.
"The president must immediately retrieve our GH¢85million stadia rehabilitation payments from his cousin Kelvin Ofori-Atta and Javkier Limited owned by the Arhin ladies," he wrote on X.
Ablakwa revealed that the Ministry of Finance had signed documents allocating GH¢85 million to a company owned by the president’s cousin.
He noted that the Essipong, Baba Yara, and Accra Stadia were supposed to be rehabilitated with these funds, yet no work has been done.
This call for action follows CAF's withdrawal of approval for the Baba Yara Stadium due to issues like an uneven playing field, poor drainage, and inadequate grass cover.
This decision came after the Africa Cup of Nations Qualifying match between Ghana and Angola on September 5, 2024.
In response, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has instructed the Ghana Football Association to invite CAF officials to inspect the Accra Sports Stadium and the Legon Stadium to determine if they meet the requirements to host Black Stars games.
