Accra, Jan 14, GNA - The Accra Metropolitans Assembly (AMA) has asked the authorities who retain the name of the country's Wembly's, the Accra Sport Stadium instead of the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium until the completion of consultations with the Ga Traditional Council and the Ga State.
A release issued by the Assembly said the renaming of the stadium after such heroes without consultations with the relevant bodies is in direct contravention of section 10 (7) of Act 462.
The statement signed by Mr Ben Annan, Presiding Member of the Assembly said at a general meeting held on Thursday, January 13 that it was decided that the old name be retained in view of the concerns raised all over Accra in the print and electronic media.
The statement further suggested that whenever it becomes necessary and prudent to honour national heroes, the first point of reference should be the place they hail from.
It said it is in line with the fact that when Heads of States, Presidents and other celebrities die, they are buried in their hometowns after state funerals.
Recently there has been a growing controversy within the Accra Metropolis over the renaming of the Accra Sports Stadium as the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium.
This prompted the Committee constituted by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports to see to the naming of sports facilities after past heroes to come out with the statement that the selection was done without ethnic or tribal inclinations.
