Gambian Papa Bakary Gassama has been named as the referee to officiate the final Group D game between Ghana and Egypt at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.
Gassama, Caf’s best referee for 2016, was the man at the center of affairs in the 2016 Champions League final between Mamelodi Sundowns and Zamalek.
He was adjudged the best continental referee in 2014 as well after becoming one of the three African referees to officiate at the world cup in Brazil. Gassama has already officiated one match at Gabon.
He was at the center of affairs when the hosts drew 1-1 with Burkina Faso in their second group game. He was assisted by Burundian Jean-Claude Birumushahu and Egyptian Abo El Sadat Bedyer Tahssen, who will obviously not assist the Gambian on Wednesday.
It is likely Ethiopian Tessema Weyesa Bamlak will assume that role at the Stade de Port-Gentil.
Ghana have already made it to the quarter-final but Egypt need at least a draw to join the Black Stars out of the group.
