Many Ghanaians know for a fact that the late President John Atta Mills was someone who loves sports.
His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, who delivered the second annual John Evans Atta Mills Memorial Lecture, hinted that he will not be surprised if President John Mills is turning in his grave at the Asomdwee Park, following the huge disgrace and embarrassment that Ghana suffered at the Brazil 2014 World Cup; as a result of Mr. Afriyie-Ankrah’s (then sports minister) poor organizational skills.
Delivering the lecture, Dr. Ibn Chambas revealed; “speaking to various audiences after the Football World Cup in South Africa in 2010, President Atta Mills (the sports enthusiast that he was) did not stir off his pride in the Black Stars and the African solidarity exhibited at the tournament. He would, no doubt, have been turning in his resting place at the Asomdwee Park in the aftermath of the dismal and scandalous showing of Ghana at the just-ended Mundial in Brazil. It is hoped that the Presidential Commission set up by President John Dramani Mahama would lead to a complete rehabilitation of the nation in future sporting events and return the smile to the lips of The Prof.
The alleged request by some 200 Ghanaian fans for asylum in Brazil while unfounded and regrettable, draws attention once more to the precarious state of the national economy at the moment."
It would be recalled that most concerned Ghanaians, particularly sports journalist and many other media practitioners, who foresaw the disgrace coming onto the nation, were very critical of Mr. Elvis Afriyie-Ankrah and his cartel about the way and manner they were handling affairs in the round-up to the World Cup; but the dismissed Youth and Sports Minister did not bother and instead went bananas.
In one instance, he (Afriyie-Ankrah) decided to curse his so-called detractors with sun and wind; referring to them as evil forces.
