Ahwoi tells lesser known sports to ride on football

Former Board Chairman of Accra Hearts of Oak, Ato Ahwoi says the various sporting disciplines in the country can ride on the success of football to aid their development.

The current Board Chairman of GNPC, headline sponsors of the Black Stars, said this during a retreat organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports on how to finance sports in the country.

Ahwoi, who was the chairman of the retreat for the various sporting disciplines on Tuesday, bemoaned why government has failed to release funds for the 38 disciplines under the National Sports Authority.

Over 50 Chief Executive Officers of Ghana club 100, together with presidents of the various disciplines under the National Sports Authority, graced the retreat to find a lasting solution on how to finance sports in the country.

On his part, the GNPC boss stated that, it is about time the lesser known sports rode on football in other to develop.

“During Nkrumah’s time, Hearts of Oak had teams like cricket and volleyball under the club and that is why Hearts is not a football club but a sporting club, because it had some disciplines under it.

“So when hearts were developing, those Associations were also developing, but it’s different now. We need to find solutions to how we can reduce the burden on government when it comes to financing.”

“Government alone cannot do it, it’s about time corporate institutions and bodies come to support the lesser known sports in the country.”

The one day retreat, which was organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, at the Movenpic Hotel, was aimed at lessening the burden on government when it comes to funding sports in the country.
