The Director-General of the National Sports Authority (NSA) Peter Twumasi has said that provisions have been made for ambulances and other essential medical equipment to be available at the 2020 National Cross Country.
The athletic competition is set to come off Saturday, February 22 at Ajumako in the Central Region. In all, 192 athletes drawn from the sixteen regions are expected to compete for glory in the event that set out to unearth Ghana’s most gifted long-distance runner.
Yesterday, the NSA held a press soiree to brief the media about preparations for the race.
Responding to a question on medical and security arrangements, Peter Twumasi revealed that the planning committee has already secured ambulances and other gadgets needed to ensure the safety and security of the athletes and officials.
He made the assurance that measures have been put in place to guarantee a hitch-free event.
“You are talking about the ambulances and obviously a competition of this nature. A 10km race, running through the swampy areas and all that, the safety of our athletes become very important. Thanks to the president we have a lot of ambulances.
The NSA has more than necessary ambulances because all the constituencies nearby will release their ambulances to us on the day”, he said. Professor Twumasi assured that the 2020 edition will create more excitements and opportunities for upcoming athletes.
He said the addition of athletes from the six newly-created regions will enhance the competition and the buzz around it.
“This year’s will be different and interesting. What I know and what I have observed is that this year’s cross country is going to be different. Because the last time, we had ten regions but this year, we will have sixteen regions, thanks to the president. So it is going to be very competitive because each of the sixteen regions is going to bring athletes for the men and women division.
It’s a 10kilometre race for both men and women and participants will be given certificates with plans underway to get prizes for the winners.
