Andre earns praise despite Swansea poor show

Swansea City suffered their second away defeat in a week after going down 3-1 at St Mary's in an indifferent display by Gary Monk's side but Andre Ayew was again the star of the show for his side even in defeat.

They had an early setback when Virgil van Dijk was allowed to nod home a corner in the 11th minute and never really recovered.

Dusan Tadic and Sadio Mane then got on the score sheet for the Saints and though Gylfi Sigurdsson notched a first of the season from the penalty spot late on, it couldn't mask a desperately poor performance from the Swans.

That is reflected in Steve Tucker's player ratings below with some players only meriting 3s from the display he witnessed on the South Coast. You can leave your own marks in the player ratings form at the bottom.
Steve Tucker's Swansea City ratings

LUKASZ FABIANSKI: He may have shipped three goals, but Fabianski had little chance with any of them really as he was left exposed by hesitancy and mistakes from his back-line. One thing for sure he will not have enjoyed this at all. 5

KYLE NAUGHTON: The Swansea defence struggled here as a unit and the full-back must hold his hands up for the part he played. Like his teammates he struggled at times to cope as the Saints pushed on. 5

FEDERICO FERNANDEZ: He has been a revelation since his arrival, but he was well of the pace at times here. An early error almost handed the Saints the perfect start and he failed to get back to his usual high standards after that. 4

ASHLEY WILLIAMS: Captain Fantastic was once more not firing on all cylinders it seemed for long-stretches in this game. The likes of Pelle, Mane and tadic made it a very uncomfortable afternoon for the Wales international. 4

NEIL TAYLOR: Probably the pick of the Swansea back-line here. Stayed solid and, typically worked really hard, got forward near the end and managed to win the penalty for his side’s consolation from the spot. 5

JACK CORK: He was back at his old club for the first time and he failed to cover himself in glory. Came under real pressure in midfield, lost Van Dijk for the saints’ opener and was taken off at half-time. 3

KI SUNG-YUENG: Was back in the starting line-up and whilst he had an early effort he just seemed to slip from view from then on. Totally failed to impose himself on the game. 4

GYLFI SIGURDSSON: He took the penalty with a cool head at least for his first of the campaign, but that cannot hide the fact that so far this season he is not hitting the heights that many expected of him. 4

JONJO SHELVEY: Forced a save early on, but from then on he was virtually anonymous. Since coming back from England duties the midfielder’s form seems to have totally deserted him. 4

ANDRE AYEW: (man of the match) Looked busy early on and at least looked like he actually wanted the ball. He had no service at all really and was forlornly dropping deeper and deeper to try to get at least some action. 6

BAFETIMBI GOMIS: The striker had no shots and no chances and he looked totally isolated as he toiled up-front. He was brought off at half-time with Eder coming on to try to inject some urgency. 3
