Veteran Great Olympics defender Dan Quaye has lashed out at fans who have attributed the Accra-based side’s struggles in the local topflight to signing of ‘old players’.

The former Black Stars man is one of four players recruited alongside ex-Ghana goalkeeper Richard Kingson, Osei Boateng and Godwin Attram, after years abroad, to facilitate Olympics’ quests following their promotion to Ghana Premier League.

However, with the club currently thirteenth on the league log with just three rounds of games to go, and with the same points as relegation-trapped Heart of Lions, a section of fans have attributed the club’s woes to signing ‘old players’ at the expense of youthful ones, a notion the defender refutes.

“Those who are saying that do not know anything about football,” Quaye told Goal.

“Although the young boys can play when we are not around, they don’t have experience. As at the time we came, the team had only 11 points and they had played about nine or 10 matches. But since we started playing, now look at the position that we are.

“We are in a relegation battle, but if the league should stop today, I don’t think Olympics would be relegated because we have 34 points and we are on the thirteenth position. So those who are saying it’s because of the old guys are big liars.”

A member of the Hearts of Oak team that won the 2000 Caf Champions League as well as the 2004 Caf Confederations Cup, Quaye joined Chinese second division side Chongqing Lifan in 2008 after falling out with then Hearts’ trainer Eyal Lachman.
