As the US has done, it is a 'must' for Mahama and Bawumia to debate - Countryman Songo

Sports journalist Patrick Osei Agyemang, popularly known as Countryman Songo, has urged political candidates to participate in a debate before the 2024 general elections.

He believes that a presidential debate allows candidates to clearly explain their policies to the nation, helping voters decide who is most qualified.

He referenced the United States presidential debate held on September 10, 2024, between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris as an example.

In an interview with Asempa FM, Countryman Songo called on National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer John Dramani Mahama to agree to debate New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, despite their differences.

"From what I observed in the US election, it would be wise for Mahama and Bawumia to debate professionally before the elections. During the US debate, Trump did not fight with the woman. If you want to be president, it is not enough to declare your intention and make your policies known to the public.

"You must prove that you can lead the nation through crises when things get tough. No one should avoid a debate. If Mahama is concerned about the 'incompetent' label from Bawumia, the debate is the perfect opportunity to challenge him on that," he said in Twi.

Meanwhile, John Mahama has reiterated that he will not engage in any presidential debate with Dr. Bawumia before the election, stating that the NPP flagbearer is not fit for such an opportunity.

The general elections are scheduled for December 7, 2024.
