Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, has congratulated George Weah as Liberia's president-elect.
Following a peaceful presidential run-off on the 26th of December, 2017 the former football star garnered 61.5% of the vote while his opponent, Joseph Boakai was far behind with 38.5%.
Gyan congratulated Mr. Weah after the first round of the presidential election in October after he won with 38.4% of the vote, compared with the 28.8% won by second-placed Mr Boakai, 73.
Speaking at the ‘LEAD SERIES’ held at the Accra Mall on Saturday, Gyan expressed his utmost support for Weah for becoming the first African to win a World Best Player and his dedication to seeking success which has earned him an honour to become a President.
“Mr George Weah is blessed and I always support him because he has always been my idol since day one.
“Ask me my Best African Player of all time and I will say it’s George Weah.
“We won the African, Europe and World Best Player of the year in one year and now he is a President.
“We the footballers have to follow his footsteps.”
The National Elections Commission (NEC) of Liberia said on Thursday that with 98.1% of the run-off vote counted, Mr Weah had won 61.5% of the vote while Mr Boakai was far behind with 38.5%.
Weah played for a string of football clubs, including AC Milan, Chelsea and Paris St-Germain, and is the only African footballer to have won both Fifa World Player of the Year and the Ballon D'Or.
