It is official. Star footballer Asamoah Gyan’s boxing syndicate BabyJet Promotions and Management has gone into the record books after its official launch in Accra. The mega rich soccer star is diverting some of his wealth into the fistic sport he describes as his passion.
“I am somebody who has passion for boxing. Everybody knows my job as a footballer but I do follow boxing since a tender age. I’ve got a lot of experience in boxing and we all know Ghana we have produced the likes of Azumah Nelson, Ike Quartey, my friend Joshua Clottey here. World champions, they are legends,” Gyan said at Thursday’s press conference at the Accra Sports Stadium to announce his boxing plans.
He also reveals plans and ambitions to revive the flagging fortunes of the sport of boxing and popularity in Ghana.
“I want to help the young ones to become world champions and we are glad to announce the biggest fight this year and one of the biggest fights of all time between George Ashie and Emmanuel Tagoe. These two are among the best in this country so it will be exciting to match them,” Asamoah stated of the billed showdown between Commonwealth Lightweight champ Ashie and highly rated former IBF Intercontinental champion Tagoe in November.
BabyJet Promotions and Management and partners Box Office Sports Promotions also used the occasion to showcase the two boxers, Ashie and Tagoe to the public as the duo traded verbal blows each promising their vociferous fans of victory.
On hand to lend support to the new promoter was former IBF champion Joshua Clottey, a close friend and confidant of Gyan as well as Alex Ntiamoah-Boakye, CEO of Box Office Sports Promotions who are collaborating with BabyJet Promotions in these initial stages. Also present was Samir Captan, President of the Ghana Boxing Authority and his Vice, Jonas Ahene-Truly and other executives of the Authority.
“It’s good that Asamoah Gyan and his friend Joshua Clottey are coming into boxing promotions. We welcome them and hope that they will have a ppositive impact on the development and progress of boxing in this country.
