Ashanti Beat Eastern In Soccer

Kumasi, (Ashanti Region) 9, Sept. Ashanti Region under-15 side beat their Eastern Region counterparts 2-1 in the opening soccer match of the week-long national sports festival played at the Kumasi sports stadium on Monday. All the goals were scored in the second half of the game, watched by a large number of sports personalities including the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr Enoch Teye Mensah. Inside right, Emmanuel Ayisi scored both goals for the Ashantis in the 46th and 72nd minutes while Alex Quainoo netted for the Easterners in the 81st minute. In the other matches, Brong Ahafo drew 1-1 with Upper West, Upper East beat Central Region 3-0 while Greater Accra were declared winners over Western Region, who refused to play when the match was only seven minutes old. The Westerners had to play with seven players following the disqualification of some of their players, found to be over the age of 15. In the women's volleyball, Ashanti beat Volta 2-1, Prison Service beat Upper West 2-0 and Police beat Western 2-0. In the men's division, Ashanti, Prisons, Police and Greater Accra won 2-0 over their respective opponents Eastern, Brong Ahafo, Fire and Central. Ashanti beat Central 47-3 in netball, Greater Accra beat Northern 45-2 and Upper West lost 6-32 to Volta. Results of the men's hockey matches were: Ashanti 2, Volta 0. Prisons 2, Eastern 1. Greater Accra 7, Brong Ahafo 0. CEPS 6, Northern 0. Fire had a walk over against Western, who could not raise a team. In the women's division, Prisons beat Volta 20-0. CEPS 1, Police 0, and Fire 1, Greater Accra 2. In the 10-kilometre walk, Vincent Assumang of Fire clocked 54 minutes 4.6 seconds to win the race. He was followed by Ahmed Tijani of Central in 54 minutes 20.5 seconds and Alex Yaw Eguakwah of Greater- Accra, third in 57 minutes 54.7 seconds. Gifty Abankwa of CEPS won the women's 1,500 event, clocking four minutes 25.9 seconds, Rose Bosomoh of Police was second in four minutes 46.5 seconds and Nyabiase Fedelia of Volta, third in four minute 47.4 seconds in. In the men's 1,500 event, Kofi Alavanyo of Police was first in three minute 49.8, Seth Bortey of Greater-Accra, second, timed three minutes 50.6 seconds and Abdallah Haruna of Northern, third in time of three minutes 53.8 seconds.
