Athletics Chairman calls for support for the association

Accra, Nov. 7, GNA-Mr Sandy Osei-Agyemang, National Chairman of the Ghana Athletics Association (GAA) has called on corporate bodies, institutions and individuals to contribute positively to the association to enable it participate in the next year's Olympic Games. Mr Osei-Agyemang made the call in Accra on Wednesday at a Corporate Meeting in Accra.

He expressed regret that athletics, which most of the time fetched more medals for the country during the games, had been completed neglected and that there was the need for the nation to take a second look at it.

Mr Osei-Agyemang said athletics still remains a distant second to football in the league of sports in Ghana but not only has the sport not been able to make up ground in recent times; it is also losing its appeal due to a catalogue of problems it was facing.

He mentioned some of the problems facing the Association as lack of infrastructure, equipment and the provision of quality healthcare for the athletes.

Mr Osei-Agyemang expressed the hope that, government as well as corporate bodies would come to their aid for the development of the sport.

This year's National Athletics Championship begins at the newly-built Essipong Sports Stadium in the Western Region from Friday, November 9 to Saturday, November 10. About 150 athletes are expected to participate in the two-day event. 07 Nov 07
