Ayew counting on AFCON to reunite Black Stars and fans

Ghana striker Jordan Ayew believes winning the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations will bring the Black Stars and Ghanaians together following years of disappointment.

The national outfit fell from grace with fans during the 2014 Fifa World Cup after boycotting training sessions ahead of a must-win last group game against Portugal to protest against unpaid appearance fees, which led to Ghana's eventual elimination following a 2-1 defeat.

“I understand everyone [anger] but in life, you cannot get everything [right]," Ayew told GH One TV.

“We the players know what we have to do. We know that this tournament [Afcon 2017] coming up in six months is very important for us, our fans and country.

"Our main target is to go to the tournament to try everything we can to bring the cup home. When the cup comes to Ghana, I think everything will be solved.

“The last game we played against Mozambique, we played home in Accra in a [40,000] stadium [but] there were maybe 10,000.

"It is difficult for us the players because we need the fans to push us to our maximum, and if the fans are not there, we can’t do that."

Ayew boasts of 37 caps and 10 goals for the Black Stars.

He added: “We know what we have to do; we just have to bring the trophy home.

"I think when we bring the trophy home, things will be smooth and everything will be fine.

“We just have to forget about the past and look towards the future. Things will be fine."

The 2017 Afcon runs between January 14 and February 5 in Gabon.
