Premier League side, Bechem United are constructing a modern-day ICT/ Library facility at Bechem, DAILY GUIDE SPORTS can confirm.
The facility, when completed is expected to offer students in the area, particularly footballers, the opportunity to combine football and education effectively.
It is expected to be commissioned on January 26, next year which coincides with the annual Kings Foundation Awards Dinner Gala.
Club president, Kingsley Owusu-Achau, pointed out that the success story of an effective combination of football and education by Tottenham Hotspur stirred him and the club’s board to construct the facility.
“We want to bring the team closer to the community and vice versa, elsewhere in Tottenham were children of school going age receive an orientation to feel part of the team through library and ICT programs.
“It has worked in Tottenham and other places and we intend doing same here, education is key and as you are aware, educated players are far better than those who are unlettered.
“We’re currently embarking on an academy system, where we are catching the players young to feed the mainstream side.”
He added “Since the days of Dr Busia, former Prime Minister, the construction of a library has been a priority of our traditional leaders in Bechem. Dignitaries like Asiedu Nketia and others hail from Bechem yet, we don’t have such a facility to feed the many schools in the area.”
As a result, he has appealed to corporate Ghana to support the facility by way of stationery supply and other equipment to furnish the facility.
Meanwhile, the club is considering constructing an astroturf in its quest to provide more sporting platforms for the youth in the area.
