Benneh wins Seniors Tennis championship

Accra, Dec. 4, GNA - Brian Benneh of the Accra Lawn Tennis Club defeated his team-mate, Emmanuel Addy by two straight games of 6-2, 6-2 to win the Third Annual Ghana Tennis Association Seniors Open Championship which ended at the Accra Lawn Tennis Club courts on Saturday.

Benneh who defeated Frank Thumbler 6-1, 6-2 in the Quarter Finals, went ahead to beat Ben Kane in the semi finals before beating Addy to clinch the victory.

Abeiku Bentil won the Men's 30 years and above category when he beat Eric Dowuona 6-3, 6-1, while Sabrina Schmidt won the Ladies category with a score of 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory over Zenabu Akoto. In the doubles event, the pair of Sabban Annan and Sam Abbey defeated Dan Laryea and his partner, Nee Amartey Sam by two straight sets of 6-4, 6-0 to win the Veterans Doubles event while Felix Asante won the Men's 40 years and above event by beating Lawrence Lartey 7-6, 6-1.

The 10-day event, which was played under the patronage of Sheikh I.C. Quaye, Greater Accra Regional Minister, was jointly sponsored by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, Apstars Airlines, State Insurance Company Ghana Limited, Unique Trust Financial Services and Japan Motors Trading Company Limited.

Sheikh Quaye commended the participants for the sportsmanship exhibited throughout the championship and asked them to keep it up. He appealed to sportsmen and women to take active and keen interest in sports so that they would remain healthy at all times.
