The National Amateur Boxing Team, the Black Bombers on Wednesday, 18th April returned from a two-week International training camp in Baku, Azerbaijan.
The programme which was initiated by the Federation’s President Ambassador Ray Quarcoo, was in pursuit of the Federation’s objective of building a formidable team with the requisite exposure and technical skills ahead of the Olympic Qualifier in Morocco, 2013 World Championships and beyond.
Hosted by the Azerbaijan Ministry of Youth and Sports at the first Class Sarhadchi Olympic Sports Center, the Team had the privilege of training with their Azerbaijani counterparts in a remarkable environment with standard equipment installations, offering all conditions for optimum training.
The training programme which comprised two training sessions daily (afternoon and evening) consisted of sparring contests with the Azerbaijani Team, specific physical conditioning and development of competition mental routine among others.
Technical/Coaching staff of the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation were available daily to assist the Ghanaian coaches in correcting the defects of the boxers especially in their movement patterns to enforce efficiency in punch with greater muscle activation and power, as well as balance and mechanical efficient positioning; not neglecting defense.
They also spiced up the training modules with programmes geared towards endurance training and psychological training especially team building, relaxation skills and fine tuning of the level of awareness needed for optimum performance.
The Ghana Amateur Boxing Federation registers its gratitude to Ambassador Ray Quarcoo for this commendable initiative and for funding the Team’s Trip.
The Federation also wishes to thank the Azerbaijan Ministry of Youth and Sports for their hospitality (provision of accommodation/meals) during the Team’s stay in Baku.
The Team has since their arrival moved into residential camping at the Hockey Stadium Hostel in Accra to wrap up preparations before finally enplaning to Casablanca, Morocco on 27th April, 2012 for the Olympic Qualification event.
