Boxing bouts organized to round off Eid-ul-Adha celebrations

Accra, Nov. 30, GNA - Accra Sabon Zongo Community on Saturday hosted an exhibition amateur boxing competition between the Black Bombers and a select youth boxing team to round off the Eid-ul-Adha Muslim celebrations. All the five bouts that took place saw the crowd thrilled with some excellent performance by the boxers with the sole woman referee, Amerley Turkson in the thick of affairs.

The occasion was witnessed by some opinion leaders of the community as well as officials of the Ghana Amateur Boxing (GBA) officials led by Mr Ofori Asare, a boxing coach and the Assemblyman for Agege Area, Mr Wallace Tackie Commey.

The events saw members of the national amateur boxing team, the Bombers exhibited good skills to the admiration of the community members and boxing fans and encouraged the youth in the area with their performance to take keen interest in boxing.

The Assembly woman for Sabon Zongo, Madam Jane Oku who organized the programme in an address, urged the youth of the area to channel their energies into boxing and other sporting events instead of creating and engaging in violent activities and other anti-social vices. Madam Oku said "you need to realize your potential and channel it into productive activities instead of engaging in unnecessary confusion and arguments that will only bring about conflict situations and tend to negate all the gains you make in your daily endeavours". The Assembly woman added that, "there are so many things you can do to improve on your living standards without taking up arms at the least opportunity to start fighting each other which tends to retard your progress and development".

The GBA coach urged interested youth to register with the GBA to be trained and nurtured to unearth their boxing and sporting talents to feature for their community and the country.
