Budding US boxer of Ghanaian descent Joseph Awinongya Jr. inspired the boys and girls of Joliet when he spoke at the Boys & Girls Club of Joliet's Back-to-School event on August 6, 2024. At just 17 years old, Awinongya Jr., a 21-time national boxing champion and Team USA member, shared his remarkable journey with the local youth, emphasizing the importance of perseverance, education, and community support.

JoJo, who began college at the age of 13, captivated the audience with his story and his belief that "education is the foundation for success." His powerful message encouraged the young attendees to stay curious and committed to their academic goals.

Following JoJo's inspiring speech, Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow praised him as a stellar example of what dedication and hard work can achieve. Glasgow expressed his admiration for JoJo’s achievements and hinted at future collaborations, including the potential establishment of a boxing gym at the Boys & Girls Club to provide additional opportunities for local youth.

Event organizer Chantel Gamboa expressed her appreciation for both speakers, noting the significant impact their messages would have on the community. "Having Joseph and James here today means a lot to our community," Gamboa said. "Their words of hope and determination will resonate with our youth as they head into the new school year."

The event also featured various community vendors, including representatives from the Joliet Library, the University of Illinois Extension program, the Girl Scouts, Amazon, and Ikea, offering valuable resources and engagement opportunities for families.

As the event concluded, Joseph Awinongya Jr. left the youth with a motivating message: "With perseverance, education, and the support of our community, you can achieve anything you set your mind to." His words captured the spirit of the day, inspiring the next generation of Joliet to strive for greatness.
