C/R Referees boycott Division Two matches

Cape Coast, Nov. 29, GNA- Football fans who thronged the Robert Mensah Sports Stadium last Sunday to watch Central Region Division Two league match between Oguaa United and Mankessim Mir F/C went home disappointed when match officials appointed to handle the match boycotted proceedings.

In an interview with Mr Michael D. Arthur, a lawyer and chairman of the Central Region Referees Association, he said the association had decided to boycott matches involving Mir F/C and Mfantsiman United following unsporting behaviour of their supporters towards match officials during league matches.

Justifying the association's claim for the boycott, the chairman said on November 6 this year, FIFA Referee Joseph MaCarthy who handled a match between Mfantseman United and Lumumba Stars was beaten by supporters of Mfantseman United and his watch, whistle, FIFA badge, red and yellow cards got missing in the confusion, while class one referee Abass Gyimah who handled Lumumba Stars and Mir F/C match on November 20 was also beaten by Mir F/C supporters after the match. Mr Mathew Doe, chairman of the Regional Football Association (RFA) who was not happy about the situation felt at least the referees association ought to have informed the RFA about their action.
