Ghana is racing against time to get the pitch at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in shape for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between the Black Stars of Ghana and Angola.

A report by Kumasi-based Nhyira FM indicates that the Confederation of African Football has sent a ‘strongly-worded’ statement to the Ghana Football Association over the state of the stadium.

The report explains that CAF is not happy with the state of the stadium and is demanding evidence of the current state of the facility.

The report states that after the GFA sent photos of the pitch at Baba Yara Stadium to CAF, the continent’s football governing body indicated its displeasure with the condition of the pitch.

Following interactions with the GFA, CAF has reportedly demanded fresh photos, after which it will make a decision on sanctioning the venue as host for the game between Ghana and Angola.

The situation comes on the back of recent developments at the Baba Yara Stadium, where a church was allowed to use the pitch for a program.

Meanwhile, Esme Mends, the Ghana Football Association’s Club Licensing Manager, has expressed concern about the condition of the playing field, stating that it is not in optimal shape to host a competitive game.

“Our major concern is the playing field, which isn’t in a good state. If there’s to be any major activity, sorry to say, Baba Yara is not ready to host a competitive game,” he told LUV FM.

“The assurance was evident because the NSA is working nonstop on the pitch, and we were impressed with the work that the employees were putting in. I have no doubt that they will have the Baba Yara pitch ready for the Angola match."

The game is scheduled for Thursday, September 5, 2024.
