Ghana coach Charles Akonnor has revealed why the Black Stars have failed to win an AFCON title since 1982, attributing it to poor preparation.
Black Stars last won the coveted continental showpiece in 1982 and have failed to add to their number of silverwares.
Ghana has come close to winning the title but failed to do so on three occasions after losing in the finals to Ivory Coast (1992 & 2015) and also lost to Egypt in 2010.
According to coach Charles Akonnor, Black Stars are not far away from adding title number five but claims that preparations should be at the quality level.
“I strongly believe that if you do prepare very well before carrying it on the field of play, you’re likely to be successful, 60% you can get it, the rest can be done by the players and everybody else", he told Joy Sports.
"But we don’t really prepare well, every time there’s been issues. We are a strong nation, a football nation, within this period that we have not won the AFCON, we’ve been to the final like two or three times."
"So we are not far from there, we need to prepare before we take it to the field of play", he added.
The 46-year-old replaced his former boss James Kwesi Appiah as Black Stars coach in January on a two-year deal and has been tasked to win the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.
