CPP CALLS FOR ‘BLACK STARS SUPPORTERS LOTTERY’ FOR SOUTH AFRICA 2010
The Convention People’s Party (CPP) notes with keen interest and enthusiasm the moves currently being made by Government to get the “rank and file” of Ghanaians enthused about Ghana’s participation in the about to-be-held Soccer World Cup tournament slated for South Africa June 11 – July 11 2010. The Party notes with further interest the intention of Government to send 2,600 Ghanaians “under government sponsorship package” to witness the historic event; as well as the launching of a fund-raising channel to enable the Ministry of Youth and Sports carry out its plans accordingly.
To ensure that every Ghanaian anywhere in the country, irrespective of affiliation to any party or organization, gets an equal chance to go to South Africa for the Soccer World Cup, the CPP wishes to reiterate the suggestion it made to Government after the CAF Championship in Angola.
We propose a special national lottery be held to give every Ghanaian the opportunity to support our teams in tournaments abroad. Such a lottery will ensure that the Bank manager at Jirapa, the chop-bar owner at Axim, the fitter at Techiman, the roofer at
Duayaw-Nkwanta or the trotro driver in Aflao has as much a chance to support a national cause as their “privileged” compatriots in Accra and other parts of the country.
This sort of method, we believe, can be institutionalized such that in the future before any of our national teams, for both soccer and other sports, male and female, take part in any major international tournaments, such a special national lottery be held to give every individual an “equal chance” to support these teams on their various fields of play wherever these may be. We believe that this would help strengthen the sense of nationhood that Sports always fosters among nations and its peoples.
? In this regard, we call upon the government to seriously consider and implement the idea of a “sports supporters’ lottery”, and immediately put in place mechanisms for selecting the next group of Ghanaians who will go and cheer on the Black Stars in South Africa.
God Bless Our Homeland Ghana.
