Confusion rears its ugly head at Polytechnic games

Sunyani (B/A) May 13, GNA - Confusion reared its ugly head after a women's football match between Sunyani Polytechnic (S-Poly) and their Tamale counterparts on Wednesday in the on-going Polytechnic games in Sunyani.

Officials, players and supporters of the Tamale side, citing bad officiating for their 3-0 defeat to S-Poly rushed onto the field at the final whistle and a free-for-all fight ensued between the players and supporters of the two sides.

The few policemen on duty had a hectic time in securing the safety of the match officials as the Tamale players and some of their officials tried to manhandle the match officials. Missiles including stones, sticks, bags of iced water were freely hurled and some of them drew cutlasses in the dirty spectacle. The police however managed to contain the situation but not without some casualties including an unidentified supporter who received a severe slash on the face.

In the men's football match, Sunyani narrowly beat Takoradi 2-1, Tamale whacked Accra 6-0, Kumasi defeated Bolgatanga 3-0, while Koforidua drew 1-1 with Ho Poly.

In the men's table tennis, K. Ayertey of Cape Coast dismissed Ofori Atta of Kumasi Poly with a 2-1 win with scores of 13-11, 10-12 and 11-5.

Ofori Atta of Kumasi also beat Kani Richard of Ho Poly in two straight games of 11-9, 11-9, while James Akpo also of Ho succumbed 9-11 and 9-11 to David Anim of Kumasi. In the women's table tennis, Beatrice Omani of Sunyani bowed 1-2 to Gloria Ayisi of Takoradi, who after losing the first set 13-15 redoubled her efforts to convincingly win the next two sets 11-5 and 12-10.

Irene Mensah of Kumasi beat Dorcas Yeboah of Cape Coast 11-9 and 11-4 while A. Millicent of Kumasi lost 4-11, 4-11 to Edith Efeh of Cape Coast.

Meanwhile, the Disciplinary Committee of the competition chaired by Mr. Owiredu Peprah, a Sunyani-based legal practitioner on Thursday, after its sitting over a number of protests decided that in view of the mayhem after the Tamale/Sunyani women's football match, all the semi-final matches of the various games should be played at the Liberation Barracks Park beginning on Friday, May 13. The Committee said the shift to the military camp would ensure that

the necessary security for match officials, players and team officials was secured. Consequently two semi-final matches would be played at the Liberation Barracks Park on Friday, with the first match involving Sunyani and Koforidua while the second semi-final encounter would be played between Takoradi and Cape Coast. 13 May 05
