The Armwrestling Federation of Africa (AFA) has reaffirmed its decision to suspend the 2020 Africa Armwrestling championship in Ghana due to the Coronavirus outbreak globally.

In a virtual meeting attended by 23 member countries, members unanimously agreed to suspend the 2020 Africa Armwrestling Championship in Accra, Ghana, in July.

The event according to the members should be suspended until there is a clearance on social gatherings by various governments, with borders opened and a cure found for Coronavirus (Covid-19).

Despite Ghana still having the hosting rights, there was a call for any member country interested to host the competition.

Members also agreed to extend the mandate of the current Board until the next championship is held where an elective congress will be organized to elect new leadership.

The continental body also officially launched its website, www.africaarmwrestling.com which will serve as a source of information for stakeholders.

The beautifully designed interactive website which comes in five different languages that are English, French, Arabic, Italian and Spanish would be the official mouthpiece of AFA and also a source of information for all stakeholders of the sport.

The meeting was attended by the President of the World Armwrestling Federation (WAF), Mr. Assen Hadjitodorov, and Secretary-General Mircea Simionescu Simicel.

The president commended AFA on the efforts to promote the sport across the continent and assured them of the World’s support in making the sport grow globally.

He also told them the world body has made armwrestling tables available for distribution to every member country.

The Secretary-General Mircea urged the members to continue working hard for the growth of the sport and reiterated WAF President’s message of the world’s continuous support for Africa.

Member federations were advised in a presentation by the head referee Nasr Youssef on the necessary safety protocols, training rudiments, eating well to boost the immune system, and adhering to all the social distancing protocols.

The meeting was attended by member federations from Burkina Faso, Benin, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Cote D’Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritius, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Seychelles, Togo and Uganda.
