Member of Parliament for the Mpohor constituency, Alex Agyekum believes senior national team players, should do more than they are currently, to help Ghana overcome the CoronaVirus crisis.
The Honorable Member, who also doubles as the Chairman for the Parliamentary Select Committee for Sports, Youth and Culture says now is the perfect time for the Black Stars players to replicate the massive love and support given them by the country.
The Covid-19 pandemic has hit various sectors of the global economy hard, with Ghana having its fair share.
In football, there is a general concern that this potentially could decimate the game which was on the cusp of a revival following a lengthy break from serious competitive action.
With local clubs and their players most likely to bear the brunt, the Ghana Football Association has formally appealed to government to be allocated a portion of the Covid-19 stimulus package to help ameliorate their condition.
However, Alex Agyekum has other opinions as he insists government’s primary objective is to protect every citizen and not just those involved in football.
He has advised that the football fraternity find solutions from within and suggested the Black Stars players come together to commit towards making a donation to help local football survive.
Despite admitting the players have been supporting individually, Alex Agyekum wants them to step this up by collectively readying a package for Ghana Football and Ghana at large.
“Our national team players, if the nation didn’t give them that opportunity to play in the name of the country. If we didn't give them a national passport to play outside the country, they wouldn't have had that exposure”, he told Asempa FM.
“So if by God’s grace they have been able to establish themselves (financially ) now is the time to give back to help”.
“Some have started individually, they should keep on. But what we are looking forward to is that they do it collectively, the senior national team through their captain should rally themselves and make a donation toward this cause. They can do it”
“So that Ghanaians will cheer for them. The Bring Back the Love is not only on the field of play, when the country also goes into difficulties, this is the time that we also bring back the love that we have for the country”.
“So we are expecting them. They should get together and do something to help the local clubs. It will not be out of place if they come together to aid the local clubs. It is about demonstrating the love we have for this country and where we come from”.
“We the politicians are doing our bit, they should also do theirs”, he concluded.
