Yendi, March 15, GNA - Alhaji Mohammed Habib Tijani, Yendi District Chief Executive has said that the successful hosting of the 14th Annual Zone Six Inter-School Competition at Yendi was a manifestation that peace has prevailed in Dagbon.
Alhaji Tijani said this at the close of the Annual Northern Regional Inter-Schools Festival at Yendi.
He said discipline, hard work, determination and strict adherence to the game rules were the essential elements of high level performance in any sporting activity and urged all the athletes to exhibit good qualities to enable them become sports heroes.
Alhaji Tijani cautioned athletes against the use of drugs, which he said can endanger their lives and mar their performance adding that, "Drugs will not help you to succeed in your various disciplines but will rather ruin your career and make you become a liability to your family, community and the entire country".
He commended the athletes for comporting themselves throughout the games and urged all selected sports men and women of the Zone to respect their coaches while in camp and exhibit the same level of discipline during the up-coming super Zonals.
Saboba E.P. Secondary School emerged the overall champions with 190 points followed by Yendi Secondary School with 180 points while Saboba St. Joseph Secondary placed third with 105 points.
The Dagbon State Secondary/Technical School and Gushiegu Secondary School tied with 104 points each for the fourth position while the 5th and 6th positions went to Chereponi Secondary/Technical School and Tatale E.P Secondary School with 93 and 75 points respectively and Zabzugu Secondary School followed in that order with 67 points.
In the boy's soccer final match, Yendi Secondary School beat Dagbon State Secondary 3-2 to lift the trophy while in the girls' division, Chereponi Secondary School beat Gushiegu Secondary by a lone goal to emerge champions.
The Headmaster of Yendi Secondary School, Mr. Daniel Paali expressed satisfaction about the performance of the participating schools and commended them for not recording any nasty incidents or confusion and prayed that behaviour is necessary to ensure that total peace prevails among the various ethnic groups in Dagbon.
Mr Paali said with the remarkable performance of the zone he was hopeful that they would put a sterling performance in the super-zonal. The Headmaster commended the Yendi and the Saboba/Chereponi District Assemblies for donating a total of five million cedis towards organisation of the competition.
