Right to Dream graduate and Helsingborg IF forward David Accam achieved a huge milestone in the just ended Swedish league season after being named for the Player of the Year accolade coupled with his selection in the League’s Best IX.
“It was a good season personally but not for the team. I was very happy to be the top scorer for my team, playing from the left wing and also the impact that I had overall,” Accam told www.righttodream.com.
Accam’s on-field displays captured the imagination of many soccer fans in the Scandinavian region and beyond.
“I have become a household name in Sweden as well where everybody knows me very well because of my performances. But it could have been better if I had helped my team get a more respectable position than the fifth place we got.”
The Nungua-born player’s performances soon caught the attention of some top clubs in Europe but he was not keen on moving elsewhere yet.
“There were a lot of teams watching me because I was playing well. But I did not want to move because I want to take time and get some more experience before making a move. Perhaps, play one more season.”
Helsingborg IF led the league standings for a greater part of the season but they lost momentum in the second round of the league season, eventually dropping to the fifth spot.
“We lost two of our best players in the second part of the league season. We lost one via transfer and another through injury and we couldn’t replace them. We couldn’t motivate ourselves after that.”
The fast winger was quick to draw on the positives of playing in his first full season as a professional player after making the big move from second tier side, Ostersunds FK, to his present club about a year ago.
“It is always great. I did not have any major injuries. I played most of the games and I hope to improve upon it. It is always good to be a top player. You always have to be a strong character to step up higher. I received a lot of motivation from people when we (Helsingborg IF) were doing well and I kept going higher.”
Accam is one of Ghana’s most prolific players in Europe scoring 10 goals in the league as well as three other goals in the Swedish Cup.
“It was down to hard work because not every winger can score 13 goals. I know I could have done much better but I have to take my time and improve upon that every year.” “You always have to set your goals, not unrealistic goals every season.”
Accam was an unused substitute in Ghana’s 2014 World Cup qualifier against Sudan on March, 2013, in what was his first call up to the national team. The speedster is relishing the prospects to linking up again with fellow RtD graduate Abdul Majeed Waris and others at the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil.
“I hope I can get the chance to add my skills to the team. I will always work hard and when I get my chance I will take it.”
“As a footballer I just need time. Maybe it might not go well at one time, but I need to look out for another opportunity.”
