Division I: Round One Over

Olympiakos pip Sportive

A.C Olympiakos completed the first round of the Division One League (DOL) with a good record when they beat Real Sportive 1-0 in their match played at the Akosombo Sports Stadium last Sunday.

By this victory, A.C Olympiakos maintained their lead on the Zone 3A league table with 19 points, having drawn once.

Both sides played a good game, with Olympiakos slightly on top of their opponents.

Real Sportive came close to scoring on three occasions, but their forwards, spear-headed by Razak Jabiru, Abdul Razak, Kojo Asiedu and Moses Ayiku, messed themselves up in the 18th, 23rd and 25th minutes.

And when Olympiakos took over, they showed their opponents how to take their chances, and in the 30th minute, inside right Ayittey Botchway scored from a goal-mouth melee to the surprise of goal-keeper Kenneth Asare and the defencemen.

On resumption, both sides came back strongly, but it was Sportive who nearly had the edge but forward George had his shot hitting the upright in the 69th minute.

Then in the 77th minute, Bukman Imoro and Mohammed Jabiru, combining effectively, continued the onslaught for Sportive but their efforts at goal were thwarted by goalkeeper Fenny of Olympiakos.

• Kaase United were beaten 2-1 by Zone 2A league leaders Prestea Mine Stars at the Offinso Park last Saturday.

Kaase United shot into the lead in the 15th minute, and the Miners equalised through Ahmed Fatao in the 45th minute.

In the second half, Mine Stars who were parading crack players like Ayew, the junior brother of Abedi Pele, and Ronaldo of Accra Professionals, changed their pattern of play and shot into the lead in the 75th minute through Ronaldo.

In the last quarter, it was a ding-dong affair as Kaase United tried to redeem the goal but good defensive work by Kwame Adjei and Tanko Issaka made victory certain for Mine Stars, who are still leading in the group.
