Eastern Region takes giant steps in juvenile soccer

The Eastern Regional Juvenile Soccer Chairman, Mr Joseph Boateng, has described the recent success attained by the region at the Milo Under-13 and Airtel Rising Stars Under-15 championship, as an indication of right administration at the juvenile soccer level in the region.

He said the Juvenile Soccer Committee of the Regional Football Association (RFA) was working with the Regional Education Directorate to ensure that every competition organized by schools was used for the selection of players for the region.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Mr Boateng said, with the help of Physical Education (PE) teachers, his outfit had undertaken tournaments and training programmes to select players for the various youth soccer teams of the region, apart from the on-going juvenile league.

He said he was confident the core of the youth players would graduate to become national assets for the Under-17 team.

Mr Abdul Lawal, Chairman of the RFA said, the success achieved was an indication that the region abound in talents that needed to be mobilized for the region, and the country at large, to have quality players.

He emphasized that the RFA owed it a duty to unearth talents to ensure a bright future for football in the region.

Mr Lawal said the players selected by the regional development coaches would not go waste, but through the Ghana Football Association (GFA) technical committee, the boys and others from other parts of the the country, would be sent to the Kwasi Nyantakyi Soccer Academy at Prampram.

Recently, Bepong Methodist Basic School from the region, won the Zone Four Milo Championship, with the participation of teams from Greater-Accra, Volta and the host, Eastern Region.

They thrashed Bawleshie Presbyterian Primary School by five goals to nil in the finals, to qualify for the National U-13 championship

The team swept the top awards at the zonal competition, with Enerst Awuah and Afriyie Bernard being adjudged the best player and goal king respectively.

At the national championship, they defied all odds to defeat Camboni R/C Primary from the Volta Region by two goals to nil in the finals to be crowned champions.

Ernest Awuah won the best player at the National Championship.

At the just-ended Airtel Rising Stars U-15 Regional Championships, Eastern Region dominated Ashanti Region to win a gold.

Eastern Region Team A and Ashanti Team A topped the four group ladder with five points apiece; however Eastern had a better goal difference than their counterparts to earn a gold.

Mohammed Musbau was adjudged the overall best player of the competition, while Edmund Boakye and Nuru Mohammed also won the best goalkeeper and third best player of the competition respectively.
