English Premier League trophy hits Accra

Accra, Aug. 22, GNA – The English Premier League trophy made its first stop of a three-nation African tour in Accra on Monday.

The 25-kilogramme trophy made of solid sterling silver, silver gilt and malachite designed on the heraldry of the Three Lions associated with English football was on public display at the National Theatre.

The presence of the most sought after title in English football in the country is a collaborative effort of Barclays Bank Ghana Limited, Multichoice Ghana and DSTV Mobile Ghana to present to fans a lifetime opportunity of having a first time feel of the title.

Kojo Addae-Mensah, Chief Operating Officer of Barclays Bank Ghana Limited at a press conference, said the arrival of the trophy in Ghana is to whip up enthusiasm for the English Premier League among Ghanaian football fans and spectators.

He said his outfit was proud to be associated with the event, which makes Ghana the first country in Africa to host the prestigious trophy.

Cecil Sunkwa Mills, General Manager of Multichoice Ghana said the event is to offer Ghanaians the opportunity to have a track of the pool of players in the English Premier League.

He said his outfit has put together attractive packages for their customers this season with reference to the top five Leagues in Europe based on the UEFA coefficient; the English Premier League, Spanish La Liga, German Bundesliga, French Ligue Un and the Italian Serie A.

The trophy was accompanied by Manchester United legend Gary Bailey, an analyst on South African pay television, SuperSport.

In attendance was Ex-Black Stars defender Samuel Osei Kuffour.

There were photo sessions by the media and the fans as they posed with the glittering trophy.

The next stop of the trophy will be in Nigeria on Tuesday, August 23 before proceeding to Kenya.

This is the first time the English Premier League trophy is touring Africa.
