External works at stadium were poorly done, Council

Essipong (W/R) Feb. 6, GNA - The Western Regional Sports Development Officer, Mr Berexford Ogebarmey Amui on Thursday expressed concern that the external works at the Sekondi Sports Stadium were poorly done by the local contractors.

Mr Amui said this when led a group of journalists on a first hand inspection of the shoddy external works executed by local contractors at the stadium at Essipong near Sekondi. He pointed out some of the deterioration that have become visible at some of the drains, walls, gates, pavements and the parking lot outside the stadium.

The Regional Development Officer was also not happy that the consultant of the Sekondi Sports Stadium project had certified that the external works were well executed.

Mr Amui who assumed his position recently suggested to the local contractors to move back to site and repair the damages before the facilities deteriorate further.

He said since the stadium has been handed over to the National Sports Council, it is its responsibility to see to it that the local contractors involved did the right thing. Mr Amui at a press conference later said the Council would organize coaching courses in basketball and handball in the first quarter of the year at Sekondi.

He said the courses would be primarily for physical education officers of the security services and the Ghana Education Service. Mr Amui said the Sekondi Sports Stadium would be the venue for some athletics competitions, adding that the residential quarters of the Chinese artisans of the contraction of the stadium would be turned into camps for sportsmen during competitions. He commended Zoomlion Ghana Limited for keeping the stadium clean and the security personnel for ensuring safety despite some acts of petty thefts.

Mr Amui urged the media to collaborate with the Council to promote and develop sports including beach games which would soon be introduced in the Region. 06 Feb. 09
