Farmers Day Chess Championship on Dec. 1

Accra, Nov. 22, GNA-The Fourth National Farmers Day Open Chess Championship will be played at the Village Inn Jazz Club at Abelemkpe in Accra on Friday, December 1.

Mr Edward Thompson, Tournament Director of the Ghana Chess Association, who announced this in Accra on Wednesday, said more than 100 players were expected to participate in the one-day competition. He said the competition, which forms part of activities marking the celebration of this year's Farmers Day, was being sponsored by the Ghana Chess Association.

Mr Thompson said the competition was also aimed at revamping the game, which had been dormant for many years now. "The interest in the game is dying slowly; people are no longer patronizing the sport. This is because we lack sponsorship,=94 he remarked.

The Tournament Director was hopeful that the association would secure sponsorship and organize periodic competitions to whip up interest in the sport.

The competition will start at 0900 hours and participants are requested to pay registration fees of 20,000 cedis each.
