Fiorentina to promote Ghana's Ashong

Ghanaian young left-back Nii Nortey Ashong could find himself in the Fiorentina first team next season due to his impressive outing for the La Viola Under-20 in the Primavera League.

Nortey has been very instrumental for the Florence-based club winning his first title for the club at the Stadio Olimpico just four days after he was signed outright from Triestina in 2011 for an amount of $450,000.

According to reports in the Italian media, coach Vicenzo Montella is bent on drafting the teenager to the senior side due to his performance.

The 19-year-old Ghanaian played a part in Fiorentina’s Copa Italia game against Empoli last year where he excelled and he is currently the fourth youngest debutant for the senior side.

Other clubs in the Serie A such as Genoa and Palermo are also keeping tabs on him. A pacey and very talented left back, Nii Nortey can also play in central defense as well as a left winger.

Fiorentina chose to send the other Ghanaian players Amidu Salifu, Maxwell Boadu-Acosty and Kofi Agyei on loan after last season’s Primavera league but maintained Ashong.

He was called up by Ghana last year for the U20 in a game against Narita FC at the Presec Legon Park where he excelled greatly.
